In May, Rape blossoms Park in Iiyama City will be a hill with a yellow carpet. The landscape of seeing Chikumagawa River from here was often seen in posters for sightseeing.  The Rape blossoms Park was founded in 1901 as a country field.  Now, Japan is a long weekend called "Golden week".  "Iiyama Rape blossoms Festival" is held and it is very lively.

５月、飯山市・菜の花公園は一面黄色いじゅうたんを敷きつめた丘になる。ここから千曲川を望む風景は観光ポスターで何度となく見てきた。菜の花公園は明治34年（1901）飯山営林署の苗圃として設立された歴史を持つ。今はゴールデンウィーク真っ最中。「いいやま菜の花まつり」が開催され一層華やかに賑わっていた。

This time cycling is with a friend.  After cycling, my friend will return to to Saitama Prefecture, so we decided to go out by car.  We drove on Joshinetsu Expressway and we got off in Toyota Iiyama  Interchange and went to Iiyama Station.  We park our car in a free parking lot on the north side of the station and then depart by bicycle.

今回は友人と一緒。その友人がそのまま埼玉県に戻る関係で、往路は車で出かけることになった。上信越自動車道を利用し、豊田飯山ＩＣで降りＪＲ飯山駅へ。駅の北側にある無料駐車場に車を停め、自転車を組み立て出発する。 

Iiyama City where there are many temples is called "little Kyoto of snowy country".  There are 22 temples around Iiyama Castle ruins park.  In parallel with the main street where there is a covered alley=Gangi Street, there is a "Temple tour promenade".  It is a beautiful Japanese alley where cobblestones are spread.  However, the bicycle cannot ride though it is regrettable.

寺のまち飯山は「雪国の小京都」とも呼ばれ、飯山城趾公園を中心に22ケ所の寺が点在する。雁木通りの裏手には「寺めぐり遊歩道」が並行する。整備された石畳の趣がある道だ。残念ながら自転車は通れない。

そもそも、なぜ飯山にはこんなにもお寺が密集しているのか。それは千曲川と密接な関係がある。かつて河川が氾濫することが多く水害を避けるため、一段高くなっているこの愛宕地区に寺を建立するのが多かったことが背景になっている（写真は称念寺の山門）。 

We Ride a bicycle, turn east from Eiganji Temple, go through the town and proceed along Saragawa River.  We go north by the bicycle National Route 117 parallel to Chikumagawa River as it is.  People in the area are planting rape blossoms to make this road a beautiful "Flower road".  The rape flowers along the road are shaking in the wind.  The wind is blowing and our bicycles are accelerating and advancing.

英岩寺の前から方向を東に変え、まち中の生活道路を抜け、皿川沿いに走行する。すぐに千曲川と合流し、そのまま千曲川左岸沿いの国道117号を北上する。この街道を地域の人々がフラワーロードにしようと以前から整備しているため、菜の花が沿線に続く。沿道の菜の花が風に揺らいでいる。追い風なので、どんどん加速しながら快走する。 

We stop by Road Station "Flower Station Chikumagawa River".  The parking lot of the road station faces National Route 117., so it is full of tourists' cars.  This is popular because it sells local wild vegetables and vegetables.  On the other side of the Chikumagawa River, you can see Rape blossoms Park (photo).  From this season, a small boat=Watashibune Boat, which connects on the banks of the river, has also appeared, which is popular.

道の駅「花の駅千曲川」に立ち寄る。国道沿いに面し、駐車場は観光客の車で混みあっている。ここは地元の山菜や野菜が置いてあるので人気がある。対岸には、菜の花公園の丘が見える（写真）。今季から、この二つを結ぶ、昔ながらの渡し舟も登場し人気を呼んでいるようだ。 

"Sasa sushi" is a traditional food that is still eaten at home in Northern Shinano=Nagano (photo).   Some use ancient rice, including local wild vegetables, mushrooms, walnuts, pickles marinated with Miso and wrapped in bamboo.  It can easily be brought to agriculture, and it is made to last by the antibacterial effect of bamboo grass. It was an old wisdom.

北信濃の家庭で今でも普通に食べられている伝統食「笹寿司」。紫米を使用するものもあり、ゼンマイ、舞茸・くるみ・味噌漬けなど地元の食材を乗せて笹で包む。忙しい農作業にも簡単に持って行け、笹の抗菌作用で長持ちさせられる先人の知恵から生まれたものなのだろう。
