サイクリングロード沿いの海岸はどこも、沈み行く夕日を眺める人たちが見られる。海なし県の長野県民からすると何とも羨ましい限りだ。紅に染まる水平線を見ていると、つい本音がこぼれてしまいそうな、そんな優しい気持ちになれる。恋人たちは陽が沈んでからも、残照が消えるまでの時間を惜しむのだろう。

信濃川の分岐点に到着。いよいよ新潟島一周サイクリングロードのクライマックスとなる。信濃川左岸沿いに整備された道を、県庁やまち並みを望みながら進む。ゴールの萬代橋までは約4.5㎞。まちの灯が目立つようになった。自転車を停め、ヘッドライトを装着する。（写真／信濃川に架かる橋をJR越後線の普通電車が白山駅方面へと進んで行く。川を渡るレールを刻む音が心地いい）
