Pottering of a bicycle in CHIBA & MITO. Vol.3
Arrived at Mito station at noon. Exit the north exit of the station and We will leave on the second floor. It is a structure which passes directly to the building in the vicinity from the footbridge and urbanization is progressing. Because it is a trip without a purpose, while looking at the sightseeing map in front of the station, We consult where We go.
We aim for Mito-Kairakuen from the North Exit of Mito Station. As you go along the road toward the west, you can see the Senba Lake at the left hand side. If you go straight it is a shortcut, however We hoping to run around the lake by bicycle. It is a beautiful city-shaped park. The name is "Kairakuen Park."
Mito-Kairakuen seen from the Senba Lake. On the hillside, you can see the building of "Koubun-tei", a symbol of Mito-Kairakuen paradise. Senba Lake is a large swamp about 3.1 kilometers around, however it seems there was an area of 3.8 times wider in the Edo period. It is a beautiful place where the mind becomes calm for those who live in this area even now and since a long time ago.
A resting place in the park (photo). When We rest in the shade like this, We are blown by the wind and watching the outside situation, it is as if it is in "Tougen-kyo" = shangri-la. I feel like that. People jogging around the lake pass by like a slow motion.
I thought what Mito's specialty food is, however I can't remember only "Natto". I attempted to order "Natto Soba" in the menu, however imagine plums blooming in Mito-kairakuen and eating soba with big "Umeboshi" on it.
Mito Kairakuen, Kenrokuen in Kanazawa, and Korakuen in Okayama are three of Japanese famous gardens. In 1842, a garden was made by Nariaki Tokugawa of the lord of the 9th generation Mito clan. There are 3,000 plum trees planted in the garden. It was named from the passage "古の人は民と偕に楽しむ = men of old enjoy with their citizens" of Chinese classics, Mencious. On the top of the hill, "Koubun-tei" designed by Nariaki himself is built. At that time, It would have been the best luxury to see plum blossom from this place at the time.
After the Mito-Kairakuen, We run by bicycle along the Sajura River which flows through the town of Mito from Senba Lake. There is also a cycling road here, and a lot of cherry blossom trees are planted on both sides (photo). The city of Mito is a regional city with a lot of nature, I had such an impression. The time is still early, so We cut through Mito Station and ride our bicycle through the city.
Mito's clan school and Kodou-Kan are the largest in comparison to the Meirin-dou in Kanazawa and the Meirin-kan of Hagi. It was built in 1841 by Nariaki Tokugawa. It was a place where students could learn medicine and pharmaceutical sciences and make butter from milk like university. The last generals of the Edo shogunate, Tokugawa Yoshinobu, also studied at this Kodo-kan pavilion until 11 years old. The picture is a stadium place. Many Mitoi clans who died fighting the new government forces should have been in this place.
"Mito Tower" is in a corner of Mito Art Museum. It is a design by Mr. Arata Isozaki who was a research student of late Kenzo Tange at the University of Tokyo. In 1989, the tower was built 100 meters high to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mito City. It is a unique structure that combines 57 panels of equilateral triangle in a spiral shape. If you think carefully, it is a mysterious building just going to the observation deck with an elevator.
